This theatre programme epitomises how the theatre programme is not just about the actors, actresses, theatre directors and scenery artists; it’s also about the people who buy the tickets and become transported to another world albeit for just a couple of hours. The theatre programme is about how people lived and about memories. Theatre during WWII war was particularly poignant and indeed some theatres closed due to the blitz. Conversely, some didn’t and of-course many performers such as Vera Lynn went to Europe to entertain the troops.
If you look closely at the cover of this London Palladium programme you will read a note that says it all:
In memory of a very happy evening with the sweetest girl in the world, John xxxxxxx
Also see notation of date Sept 1942 also written in beautiful script, presumably by original theatre-goer.
