As much an historical document as a fascinating theatre programme. The Merry War, a new comic opera first time in England, with music by Johann Strauss. The complex plot is a fascinating read on page 3, describing war and love as ‘friendliness, merriment, and marriage’.
The theatre-goer has had plenty to say other than the date…on the front cover is written: “Morning performance, Guards from Egypt invited, full house”. Inside the programme there are two more inscriptions: “all improved cut short” and “Best I’ve seen”.
In addition, this slightly larger programme is in excellent condition despite being 132 years old, please see Condition Code and images.
