Mr. Arthur Bourchier presented a performance of The Merchant of Venice at the Garrick Theatre (of which he was manager and lessee) on 11th October 1905 and also at Windsor Castle by Royal Command of Queen Alexandra on 16th November 1905. To commemorate these occasions, he commissioned a beautiful souvenir:

Enclosed in a robust card folder are prints as listed below. Each print is approx. 17cms x 12.5cms and is loosely attached to stiff brown card (approx. 27.5cms x 22.5cms) by the top corners only. The stunning prints in vibrant colour were originally painted by Chas. A Buchel in 1905. A German born artist, emigrated to England as a child, Mr. Buchel became renowned as an artist specialising in painting portraits of actors, theatre programmes and souvenirs, theatre posters and magazines. He worked for Mr Herbert Beerbohm Tree for 16 years thus his art had a strong Shakespearian theme.

List of Prints:

  1. Bourchier as Shylock
  2. Norman Forbes as Launcelot Gobbo
  3. Mr Harcourt Williams as Gratiano
  4. Julian L’Estrange as Bassanio
  5. Miss Violet Vanbrugh as Portia
  6. Miss Elfrida Clement as Jessica
  7. Miss Muriel Beaumont as Nerissa
  8. The Trial Scene

A rare and beautiful piece of theatre history and art.
