This early 1930s theatre programme is for two performances by Gilbert and Sullivan:  Iolanthe and The Mikado performed by D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1934 at the King’s Theatre in Hammersmith, London. The programme has interesting advertisements throughout the programme with some illustrations, particularly an advertisement for Newhams on page four promoting the Monte-Carlo Rally and Triumph cars, with a detailed an illustration of a Triumph car in front of a map of the route across Europe. The cast list for Iolanthe is presented across page five and The Mikado is presented across page seven.

Iolanthe and The Mikado are both comic operettas written by Gilbert and Sullivan; Iolanthe was first performed at the Savoy Theatre, London in 1882 and The Mikado in 1885. Gilbert & Sullivan were prolific and successful two-man team who created fourteen comic operas together; Iolanthe is the seventh comic opera and The Mikado is the fourteenth. The pair created hugely popular musical performances, working together for around 25 years.

William S. Gilbert, born in London, (1836-1911) was a successful lyricist, poet and illustrator. Arthur S. Sullivan was the composer, also born in London, (1842-1900), the son of a military band master.

The programme is made up of smooth green and cream paper and printed in blue and black inks. 12 pages including front and back cover pages; approx. H22cm x W14cm.

There is a notation on the front cover, presumably written by the theatre-goer, stating the date when attending the performance and with whom.
