This 1919 Theatre Royal Drury Lane theatre programme has the typical design favoured by the theatre during this period. The front cover design represents the original 1662 charter granted by King Charles II to Thomas Killigrew, who built the first Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1663. Unfortunately, the original theatre was destroyed by a fire in 1672. There have been four theatres built on the site. The present theatre was opened in 1812 and designed by Benjamin Wyatt.
The theatre programme consists of a cream smooth paper with black printed ink, with an additional insert informing of casting changes. The cast list is displayed across centre pages 8&9 and the rest of the programme is dedicated to informative advertisements such as Columbia Records, A School of Modern Dance, Chappell Pianos with a detailed illustration and more.
Included in the pages of interesting reads is a particularly amusing advertisement on page 14, entitled ‘an ideal gift for children’ which starts in bold capital print ‘Parents who wish to please their children’ (in smaller print goes on to read), should procure a copy of ‘With Love from Daddy’ a book of letter, rhymes and sketches.
The programme consists of 16 pages including front and back cover. Approx. H 22cm x W 14cm. The additional insert is approx. 19cm x 13cm.
