This rare extremely rare 1880 theatre programme presents Mr. Richard D’Oyly Carte’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. It opened on 3rd April 1880 with the original London cast as listed; later George Power was replaced by Durward Lely. This was the penultimate production that Mr. D’Oyly Carte produced at the Opera Comique, before moving to his newly built Savoy Theatre in 1881. Situated in the Strand, London, it was the first public building built with electricity and was built to particularly showcase Gilbert and Sullivan operas which also became known as Savoy Operas.

Condition Code: 4: Difficult to grade as it is extremely rare to find a delicate paper programme of 139 years intact and thus it is in very good condition. The pages are flat and clean for its age. There are two holes at spine edge from a previous binding; a 1cm split at lower spine; and a ½ cm tear on spine. Evidence of horizontal fold. Please examine photographs.
