The Bancroft’s had a significant influence on theatre in the late 1800s. Squire Bancroft married Marie Effie Wilton in 1867 and they became joint managers of the Prince of Wales Theatre. Success in this venture enabled them to move to the larger Theatre Royal, Haymarket and after some rebuilding, opened in 1879, purported to be the first theatre to use electricity. Their careers continued to be successful both artistically and financially.
This 137 year old theatre programme presents two shows: Fedora, written by Victorien Sardou originally for Sarah Bernhardt; First in the Field, a light comedy written by C. M. Rae.
