The cover of this stunning programme consists of a thick matt cream parchment style paper printed with royal themed design in gold, green and red embellishments.

The programme contains an additional ‘Preliminary Notice’ insert booklet, which includes an announcement on the cover page of the insert that ‘Their Majesties the King and Queen (King George V & Queen Mary) would be attending this Special Matinee performance. Overleaf in the centre pages of the insert is an abbreviated cast list and play title, on the back of the insert booklet is the list of seating prices.

Also included with this programme is a newspaper clipping from May 15th 1928 with a short review of the ‘Special Matinée’ performance, touching on the royal attendance and the high calibre actors of the performance.

The programme notes the Special Matinee Performance with Royal attendance from King George V and Queen Mary, of the Scarlet Pimpernel on 14th May 1928. This was a significant year for the king as in November 1928 he fell seriously ill from septicaemia and for the next two years while his health was still poor, his son Edward took on most of the royal responsibilities on behalf of the King.

The play was produced by Mr Fred Terry and includes such famous stars of the era as Lady Tree, Dennis Neilson-Terry, Gerald du Maurier, Julia Neilson and Mr Fred Terry himself.

The programme contains large and some full page advertisements of beautiful and elaborate illustrations or photographs, which target the station and wealth of the audience of this special royal matinee performance of The Scarlet Pimpernel. There are descriptive and informative advertisements promoting fashion, fine furniture, indoor luxury furnishings, wireless sets and gramophone recordings, and also includes is a full page advertisement with photo promoting Cartier’s ‘A collection of pearls’ and also a half-page advertisement for Burberrys pure silk weatherproofs with an illustration on two fashionable woman donning a coat and hat on a rainy day.

The list of Patrons and the Matinee Commitee reads as a who’s who of the aristocracy of the day.

The centre pages present the illustrious cast.

The programme consists of 28 pages including front and back covers. There is an additional insert booklet of 4 pages and a newspaper clipping.

Condition Code: 4-5: Centre pages have detached due to the rusting of the two staples, however the rest of the pages are firmly secure. The cover has an approx. 2cm split at top of spine and an approx. 6cm split at base. Internal pages are smooth, flat and in lovely condition for its age.
