William Henry Ralph Reader CBE created the Gang Show in the early 30s, featuring around 150 Boy Scouts, mainly from London’s East End. This is and subsequent shows were popular by both participants and audiences.
During World War II, Ralph Reader was approached by the RAF to gather intelligence in France under the cover of a touring Concert Party. Ralph Reader’s concerts were widely performed, purported to have entertained 3.5 million service men, combining successful intelligence activities and boosting morale. Many famous names started their careers in these RAF concert parties, such as Peter Sellers, Tony Hancock, Dick Emery.
After the war, Ralph Reader continued to write and produce the Boy Scout Gang Shows until 1974, mainly at Golders Green Hippodrome; the final Ralph Reader produced show was performed at the Gaumont State Theatre, Kilburn.
The Gang Show legacy continues with local Scout groups around the country.
