This very special programme is for the single performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera, H.M.S Pinafore; a ‘Gala performance in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen In aid of King George’s Pension Fund for Actors and Actresses at 8:30pm on Wednesday, 7th February, 1962’. Page 3 has a beautiful full page black and white photograph of Her Majesty the Queen in all her finery.
The programme has interesting advertisements, some accompanied with illustrations and photographs.
H.M.S. Pinafore was first premiered at the Savoy Theatre in 1878 and was Gilbert and Sullivan’s 4th comic operetta. Gilbert & Sullivan were a prolific and successful two-man team who created fourteen comic operas together over a period of around 25 years. William S. Gilbert, born in London, (1836-1911) was a successful lyricist, poet and illustrator. Arthur S. Sullivan was the composer, also born in London, (1842-1900), the son of a military band master.
