This rare extremely rare 1880 theatre programme presents Mr. Richard D’Oyly Carte’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. It opened on 3rd April 1880 with the original London cast as listed; later George Power was replaced by Durward Lely. This was the penultimate production that Mr. D’Oyly Carte produced at the Opera Comique, before moving to his newly built Savoy Theatre in 1881. Situated in the Strand, London, it was the first public building built with electricity and was built to particularly showcase Gilbert and Sullivan operas which also became known as Savoy Operas.
